Senator John Cornyn of Texas has thrown his ten-gallon hat into the ring for the top job in the Republican-controlled Senate, and boy howdy, he’s not afraid to ruffle a few feathers to get there. The seasoned senator is hootin’ and hollerin’ for term limits on the Senate GOP leader, even as he’s moseying on over to take the reins from current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Now, let’s talk turkey here. McConnell has been callin’ the shots for the Republicans in the Senate since back in ’07, and that makes him the longest-serving Senate leader in the history books. But ol’ Cornyn thinks it’s high time for a change, yessiree! He’s fixin’ to shake things up by pushin’ for term limits so that more folks can have the chance to take a crack at leadin’ the Republican posse.
Cornyn made his intentions loud and clear in a post on the ol’ Twitter machine, where he declared, “The reason I aim to be the next Republican Leader is because I reckon the Senate needs more voices in the mix, and that means givin’ any ol’ member the chance to step up to the plate.” He pledged to support a vote to shake up the rules and put a cap on how long a cowpoke can wrangle the GOP herd.
Now, it’s a showdown between Cornyn and South Dakota’s own Senator John Thune to claim the top spot when McConnell rides off into the sunset later this year. And it looks like Wyoming’s Senator John Barrasso is throwin’ his hat in the ring for the role of Republican whip instead of goin’ head to head in the leader race. The Senate GOP will be settlin’ this here tussle for the top dog in November after the elections, when the Republicans might just lasso back control of the chamber.
