CREW Stokes Controversy Over Erased Jan 6 Database, Ignores Bigger Issues

In a twist worthy of a political thriller, the Trump Justice Department has allegedly erased the government’s primary database of January 6 defendants from the internet, igniting a firestorm of controversy. Conservative watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW—an ironic name for a group that seems to have more responsibility for dishing out partisan nonsense than for actual ethics—has come out swinging, calling for a probe into what they describe as the illegal destruction of an official record. Apparently, the removal of this database is just another chapter in the supposed story of President Trump’s effort to fabricate a more palatable narrative around the events of that fateful day.

Claiming a monumental threat to truth and transparency, CREW urges the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Justice Department’s inspector general to investigate the matter. They posit that the Justice Department’s actions are indicative of a nefarious plot to whitewash history, firmly placing the blame on Trump for attempting to sanitize the insurrection. One has to wonder: if they’re so concerned about historical accuracy, why didn’t they ever care enough to investigate the riot’s root causes in the first place?

The timeline here is particularly amusing. The database vanished shortly after Trump’s inauguration, a mere coincidence or calculated timing? It contained information about nearly 1,600 defendants characterized as insurrectionists. Critics are clearly frothing at the mouth, lamenting the loss of a database that provides them with data to continuously beat the drum of January 6 accountability—never mind the fact that Trump has already granted a blanket pardon to these individuals.

Curiously enough, the Department of Justice has kept its lips sealed regarding why it decided to delete the database, hiding behind silence like a cat burglar in the night. NARA agreed to look into the situation, but it also provided a much-needed dose of common sense. According to them, simply removing what they call “web content” from public access isn’t illegal, as long as the information is preserved in accordance with federal law. In other words, the sky isn’t falling just yet, despite CREW’s histrionic panic.

Not content to simply execute a digital deletion, the FBI followed up by erasing its own “Capitol violence” web page, contributing to the political circus. Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Washington has taken it a step further by scrapping its “Capitol Siege” page. It remains unclear how much more information this political witch hunt might strive to purge from history, but at least individual press releases documenting charges and outcomes remain on the Justice Department’s website.

While the liberal media frantically clamors to connect dots like children with crayons, it becomes apparent that this latest chapter in political intrigue is less about transparency and more about continuing to keep the January 6 narrative front and center. After all, for many on the left, an eraser can often be a more persuasive tool than actual facts.
