CT Mourns Ex-Sen Weicker: Foe of Nixon & Father of State Income Tax

This week, a somber cloud of sadness settled over the hearts of many Connecticut Republicans as they learned that former longtime Sen. Lowell Weicker had passed away at the ripe age of 92. It was as if a piece of Connecticut’s conservative history had bid its final farewell.

Weicker’s political journey began in 1962 when he triumphantly won a seat in Connecticut’s General Assembly. Little did anyone know at the time that this politician would soon become a foe of none other than the infamous Richard Nixon, a Republican president who redefined the term “watergate.”

But let’s fast forward a bit. Eight years later, Weicker achieved another resounding victory, this time securing a seat in the Senate, where he proudly waved the liberal flag within the realm of the Republican Party. He held his ground in Washington for nearly twenty years before taking on the challenge of serving as Connecticut’s governor from 1991 to 1995.

As senator, Weicker gained notoriety for his outspoken criticism of Nixon during the scandal investigations. He referred to the Nixon White House as a “cauldron of corruption,” and his words echoed through the chambers of Congress. Say what you want about Weicker, but he certainly wasn’t one to hide his opinions.

Ned Lamont, the current Democratic governor of Connecticut, fondly reminisced about Weicker’s passing, offering words of praise for the late Republican. He acknowledged Weicker’s commitment to improving Connecticut and admired his unwavering determination in tough battles. Oh, how the Democrats love to honor their “moderate” comrades.

Meanwhile, conservatives unsurprisingly seized the opportunity to raise concerns about Weicker’s record. Ann Coulter, the ever-vocal conservative commentator and proud Connecticut native, pointed out Weicker’s role in creating the state income tax. Perhaps it’s worth noting that Connecticut is now known for its sky-high taxes and fleeing residents, but hey, let’s not dwell on that.

In honor of Weicker’s memory, flags in the state will be flown at half mast until further notice. It seems the liberals are always quick to mark their territory with symbolic gestures. But let’s not forget the bigger picture here. Weicker may have left behind a legacy, but it’s up to us conservatives to ensure that our principles and values prevail over the liberal agenda that he so proudly championed.

Rest in peace, Lowell Weicker. May your journey through the pearly gates shed light on the true meaning of conservatism and the importance of limited government—an essential lesson for any politician.
