In the glittering world of Hollywood tough guys, Robert De Niro has always held a special place, especially in playing those iconic roles in mafia epics. Yet, who knew the stone-faced actor could turn into a teary-eyed grandpa at the mere mention of politics? The sharp contrast between his on-screen persona and off-screen antics could only be more pronounced if he were cast in a reality show about emotional blunders.
The recent episode in the saga of De Niro’s public meltdown brought him to the verge of tears at the mention of Donald Trump. Now, here’s a guy who has elbowed his way through the Hollywood hierarchy with roles that could send shivers down your spine, erupting like Old Faithful every time politics enters the stage. Despite his bold acts on the big screen, he’s turned into an unfortunate spectacle, more like a melodrama than an action flick.
De Niro’s anti-Trump outburst seems to be an ongoing series. The star, who once was hailed for being a cinematic genius, seems to have traded in his “tough guy” brand for a starring role in his self-directed soap opera. Gathering flak from conservatives, including many of his fan base, for continuously slamming Trump, De Niro’s antics have become more resemble the slapstick than strategy.
The problem with De Niro is as glaring as a plot hole in one of those summer blockbusters – he claims he wants to unite and uplift, yet his words and actions do little more than spark division. Resorting to dramatics that might be better suited for an acting workshop than a political debate, De Niro seems less the stoic hero of his movies and more a parody of emotion.
And so, we learn yet another lesson from the left-coast luminary’s lamentations. Hollywood, with its penchant for dramatics and self-importance, continues to reveal itself as more farce than fact. While De Niro’s star may glow in the cinematic firmament, his political performance is a spectacle of bitter tears and ironic laughter. It seems audiences hoping for a return of the steely resolve from his early career will have to double down on hearty skepticism and, of course, a little popcorn.
