Stacey Plaskett – a Democratic Virgin Islands delegate – made a sharp and violent remark regarding former President Donald Trump on Sunday during a live interview with MSNBC. Plaskett recklessly stated that Trump needs to be “shot”, as she discussed Trump’s indictment by the Biden administration’s Justice Department last year regarding allegedly classified documents found in his Mar-a-Lago home.

Plaskett’s comment is both harmful and alarming, particularly because she is serving as the ranking member of the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of Federal Government. How could someone who is responsible for critical government oversight advocate for shooting a former president? It is also worth noting that Plaskett has served as an impeachment manager for Trump’s second impeachment, and the Senate eventually acquitted the former president.

Plaskett’s comment is not only disturbing but also incorrect as her claims that Trump “put out and shared classified information” and that it is “terrifying to all Americans” are baseless. Republicans highlighted that President Biden’s recent stashing of classified documents has not yet been legally addressed, yet Plaskett dismisses the claims and Hillary Clinton was never charged for retaining classified documents on a private email server while secretary of state.
Plaskett’s “slip of the tongue” is an unfortunate display of anger and hostility that should not go unnoticed. Her comments should raise concerns about her ability to serve in government while exhibiting such reckless behavior. Calls for her immediate resignation are more than justified, as Plaskett crossed a line with her call to shoot a former president. In a time when Americans need to come together, Plaskett’s dangerous rhetoric only serves to further divide us.
