Democrats Blame Trump While Chaos Reigns at Borders

America is fed up with leaders who talk tough but refuse to back policies that actually keep our neighborhoods safe. On the Feb. 4 edition of Rob Schmitt Tonight, a lineup of voices — from senators to legal thinkers — drilled into the most important story of the day: the federal crackdown on lawlessness and the furious reaction from the left. The debate was not about whether we should have secure borders and public safety; it was about whether our own institutions will stand behind the officers doing the hard work.

Democratic Rep. Adam Smith told viewers that voters broadly agree on the need for a secure border but that the Trump administration has hurt itself with tactics and rhetoric. That’s a convenient narrative for Democrats who always side with open-borders chaos until it hits their own towns; Smith’s selective outrage ignores that enforcement is the only way to restore order and protect American lives. The real question is whether political posturing will be allowed to hamstring the men and women on the ground.

Make no mistake: a nation without borders is not a nation. President Trump and his team, including border czar Tom Homan, are attempting to do something very few politicians have the guts to do — enforce the law and prioritize American citizens over open-border special interests. Conservatives should offer fierce support for principled enforcement, while demanding clear rules of engagement that respect due process and keep officers safe so they can do their jobs without being dragged through the media meat grinder.

The tragedies in Minneapolis — the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti — have stirred real emotion and legitimate questions about how federal agents operate during surges and sweeps. Protesters have taken to the streets and the nation is watching, while federal officials say the agents involved have been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure during investigations. Law and order conservatives mourn any loss of life, demand truthful transparency, and insist that bad actors be held accountable without allowing partisan grandstanding to undermine enforcement across the country.

The Justice Department’s different treatment of the two cases only adds fuel to a toxic political fire, and even some prosecutors have resigned in disgust at how the matters are being handled. If the department is selective about investigations based on politics, that is a betrayal of the oath to equal justice under law and a recipe for chaos in every city that sees federal enforcement pulled back under pressure. Americans deserve a justice system that applies rules consistently and fairly, not one that swings with the partisan winds.

Even senior DHS officials were pressed in testimony about the operations in Minneapolis, and the contrast between Washington’s rhetoric and street reality is stark. Conservatives must neither reflexively excuse every misstep nor allow the left to weaponize tragedy to gut border security; instead, we should demand clear, accountable action that restores safety without surrendering sovereignty. The problems we face are real, and the solutions require strength, not apologies.

This is a moment for conservatives to stand tall: defend law enforcement, insist on full and fair investigations, and push the Trump administration to refine tactics so they are effective and lawful. We want enforcement that protects our neighborhoods and our rights, not theater that placates the coastal elites or cowers before outrage mobs. If patriots keep pressing for accountability and courage, America will come out safer and stronger on the other side.
