The Democrats showcased their talent for public embarrassment during a highly anticipated evening this past Tuesday. With the spotlight on President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, the party seemed to be taking a crash course in how to lose more ground. From Georgia Representative Al Green’s dramatic ejection early on to Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin’s lackluster response, the night was a spectacle of political ineptitude.
Among the less-than-stellar performances was Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett, who has managed to lower the bar further than even the most lenient of progressive standards would allow. Just ahead of the address, she decided to channel her inner pop star with a poorly conceived social media post lip-syncing to Kendrick Lamar, promoting herself as the face of Democratic talent. The message was as cringe-worthy as it was misguided, proving that the party still doesn’t understand the tone of the American electorate.

Crockett clearly missed the memo that a presidential address isn’t a concert, and her declaration of “DO NOT WATCH!” was about as disingenuous as it gets, especially since she high-tailed it out midway through the speech. This was hardly the show of commitment she tried to convey. It’s almost as if she understood her performance would be painfully short, confirming yet again that walking out on a president doesn’t win any points with voters.
The irony of her plea comes full circle when examining her late-night publicity stunt: far and wide, citizens on social media did not heed her advice. As news spread of her antics, the backlash was swift and brutal—4.4 million views weighed heavily against her. Many commenters found her actions to be shameful, though they masked their contempt with a hint of civility, urging her to showcase some professionalism. Instead, it appeared she was intent on keeping her production level somewhere near a talent show audition gone wrong.
Crockett isn’t new to the limelight of social media fiascos; she has a history of using hip-hop references as a means of political expression. However, that might play well within her tight-knit 30th Congressional District in Dallas, where for some, the idea of a self-styled ‘politician’ lip-syncing to the latest hits sounds more appealing than actual governance. The notion that this type of behavior could win over voters nationally is an outright fantasy.
For those delighting in the political theatre of the moment, it’s clear the Democratic Party should be worried. If they think they can reclaim the consciousness and trust of Americans through bravado and viral videos, then they’re in for a rude awakening. With the strategies of booing, walking out, and theatrics announcing their political strategy, it’s evident that the Democratic Party may not only be managing the status quo but is also rapidly accelerating their own demise. And who knows—maybe Kendrick Lamar will pen a reflection on the state of the Democratic Party, leaving Crockett in the dust to take on her next endeavor. A career change might be in order; the political landscape is harsh for those who can’t make it past their own cringe-worthy moments.
