Democrats’ Reparations Rift May Tank 2024 Hopes

The Democrats are in shambles as they grapple with the issue of reparations for descendants of slaves, and it’s leaving a bad taste in their mouths for the 2024 election. In 2023, the push for reparations gained steam in various cities and states, causing quite the ruckus among the left. The latest offender? New York, as Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill to create a task force to explore the possibility of doling out cash to the descendants of slaves. She called on all New Yorkers to “be the patriots” and acknowledge the ugly truths of the past. Someone get the Democrats a history book, because they seem to have forgotten how much progress has been made since the days of slavery.

Not to be outdone by the Big Apple, California jumped on the bandwagon three years prior, authorizing a similar task force to look into the reparations issue. Governor Gavin Newsom, ever the trend-follower, spoke about the task force being a step in the right direction for a “more inclusive and equitable future for all.” It’s like they think throwing wads of cash at people is going to solve centuries of complex societal issues. Newsom also emphasized that reparations are about more than just money, but conveniently left out any concrete plans for said reparations. That’s the Democratic way – promise the world, but deliver nothing.

Then there are the cities of Evanston, Illinois, and San Francisco, who have already started implementing reparations programs. Evanston has handed out over $1 million in payments, as if they’ve got money to burn. Where are they getting all this cash from, anyway? And if those Democratic strongholds can’t even drum up favorable polling for cash payments, what chance do they have on a national scale? A poll in California found that 59% of voters do not support reparations payments for some black residents, with nearly four in 10 saying they strongly oppose it. Maybe the Democrats should take the hint and focus on policies that actually make a difference in people’s lives.

Even the White House seems to be hedging its bets on this issue, with the Biden administration expressing support for a study to examine reparations proposals. Perhaps they’re beginning to realize that the majority of adults, a whopping 68%, are not on board with the idea of reparations for descendants of slaves. Imagine that, the American people have some common sense after all. Rep. Dean Phillips, a 2024 presidential hopeful unlikely to make it past the primaries, has thrown his weight behind reparations, waxing poetic about investing in every disenfranchised community and talking about education and healthcare as the answer to reparations. It’s as if the Democrats think throwing money at every problem will make it disappear.

It’s no wonder President Biden has kept his lips sealed on the issue as he gears up for the 2024 election. If this whole reparations debate gains traction, it could spell disaster for the Democrats. With the vast majority of adults opposing cash payments for descendants of slaves, it’s like the left just can’t read the room. The people want real solutions, not empty promises and grandstanding. One wonders if the Democrats will ever learn.
