Denver Mayor Drowns in Abbott’s Immigrant Wave

Democratic Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is singing the blues about the torrent of immigrants pouring into his city. The big cheese of the Mile High City is whining that Denver is drowning in a sea of newcomers, and it’s become crystal clear that the border crisis is starting to plague states that aren’t even located near the Mexican border.

This weepy Democrat took a field trip to a jerry-rigged camp for a little photo op, all while the temperature was colder than a polar bear’s toenails. Apparently, a gaggle of immigrants are catching some shut-eye under bridges and queuing up for a bite to eat or a place to crash every night.

According to Mayor Johnston, this whole situation is both a humanitarian crisis and a financial headache for cities like Denver. He’s been blowing up the phone lines, pleading for more federal moolah to deal with the crisis. Of course, he conveniently forgets to mention who’s going to foot the bill for all this.

Ol’ Johnston is just one of many Democratic mayors who are being bombarded by an influx of immigrants thanks to Governor Greg Abbott of Texas, who’s been sending a boatload of asylum-seekers to cities like Denver, New York City, and Chicago.

Since May, Denver has been graced with the presence of nearly 40,000 immigrants, many of whom are reportedly from Venezuela seeking asylum and had what’s called “Temporary Protected Status.” However, a wrench has been thrown into the works because most of these newer arrivals don’t qualify for this special status.

And, of course, they had to interview one of these immigrants, “Adriana,” who didn’t even have the gumption to provide her last name. She and her family skedaddled from Venezuela and ended up living in a tent under a bridge in Denver. She’s harping on about the cold weather and her son’s asthma, as if anyone forced her to come here in the first place.

To add insult to injury, the mayor and his merry band have been traipsing around immigrant camps, urging them to scoot on over to new shelters or warming centers. But here’s the kicker: they’re being bombarded with questions about when they can start working.

Of course, the mayor is bellyaching about how the federal government is as useful as a screen door on a submarine when it comes to supporting cities like Denver. He’s chomping at the bit to drop a cool $180 million annually on immigrant services, which would lead to slicing and dicing other city budgets.

And to add insult to injury, he’s sipping on the haterade when it comes to Governor Abbott. Apparently, he’s been trying to reach out to him and work on a plan to spread these immigrants around to different cities.
