DeSantis Surges in Iowa, Trump Battles with Beloved Governor!

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, a rising star in the Republican Party, has gained traction among likely Iowa caucusgoers, according to a poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump’s support in the state seems to be waning.

The poll revealed that 20% of likely Iowa Republican caucusers plan to vote for DeSantis, positioning him as a strong contender in the upcoming caucus. Although Trump remains the front-runner with 44% of support, this marks a decline in his popularity compared to previous polls and national numbers. Across the country, Trump garnered 54% support from Republicans, suggesting that his appeal is not as strong in Iowa.

One possible reason for Trump’s diminishing numbers in Iowa could be his recent public feud with Governor Kim Reynolds. Trump took to Truth Social, his new favorite social media platform, to criticize Reynolds for not taking sides in the caucus campaign. By attacking the popular governor, Trump may have damaged his reputation among Iowa voters.

On the other hand, DeSantis has been skillfully capitalizing on the discord between Trump and Reynolds. He has gained an important endorsement from State Senator Jeff Reichman, who switched his support from Trump to DeSantis. In addition, a super PAC supporting DeSantis has purchased a seven-figure ad spot to highlight Trump’s criticism of Reynolds. This strategic move could sway Iowa voters in favor of DeSantis.

DeSantis’s campaign is also emphasizing his friendship with Governor Reynolds. They recently released a mug for sale that was gifted to DeSantis by Reynolds during a visit in March. The mug boldly reads, “Get S*** Done,” a phrase that speaks to DeSantis’s reputation as a governor who takes action. By showcasing their close relationship, DeSantis is positioning himself as a candidate who can work effectively with other Republican leaders.

The Iowa Republican caucuses hold significant importance in the presidential nomination process. With less than six months until the 2024 caucuses, the rivalry between DeSantis and Trump is heating up. While Trump still leads in the polls, the dynamics in Iowa seem to be shifting in favor of DeSantis. Only time will tell how this battle for Iowa’s support will play out.
