DeSantis Takes Aim at Trump’s Age in Bold Campaign Gambit

In a recent appearance on CNN's State of the Union, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) didn't shy away from criticizing former President Donald Trump, particularly focusing on Trump's age. DeSantis asserted that the presidency is not a role suited for someone "pushing 80 years old," subtly alluding to Trump's age of 77. He emphasized, "Father Time is undefeated. Donald Trump is not exempt from any of that."

DeSantis continued to speculate that Trump's hesitancy to engage in debates with his Republican primary opponents could be attributed to his age. According to DeSantis, Trump in 2015 and '16 was a different figure who would confidently participate in debates and passionately campaign. However, he observed a shift, noting that Trump now relies on a Teleprompter, avoids debates, and runs on many of the same promises from 2016 that were left unfulfilled.

These comments from the governor are part of a strategic move by his campaign to make Trump's age a focal point, drawing parallels with President Joe Biden, who is nearing 81 years old. This tactic coincides with a decline in DeSantis's polling numbers, averaging at just 14.7%, compared to Trump's 58.9%, as per RealClearPolitics.

DeSantis appears unapologetic in casting shade on the former president, using Trump's age as a lever to differentiate himself, particularly at a time when he faces challenges in the polls. His bold approach to directly confront Trump showcases a calculated political maneuver aimed at reshaping the political landscape. Whether this strategy yields dividends remains uncertain, but DeSantis's assertiveness is undeniably making an impact as the political arena continues to intensify.
