Rep. Addison McDowell told Newsmax’s Wake Up America that the ongoing funding impasse at the Department of Homeland Security has real, dangerous consequences for the nation’s security. He warned that when agencies like the Coast Guard and the TSA are left unfunded, our homeland is put at risk and frontline personnel are forced to pick up the pieces.
This partial DHS funding lapse began in mid-February and has expanded into an avoidable crisis born of political theater rather than sober governance. Lawmakers failed to pass timely appropriations, and everyday operations at critical homeland agencies have been disrupted as a result.
TSA officers have been forced to work without pay, producing snarled lines, staffing shortfalls, and mounting stress on travelers and airport operations nationwide. Managers and union leaders are sounding the alarm that morale is collapsing and security can’t be sustained indefinitely on a promise of back pay.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has issued furlough guidance and warned that many of its civilian and some uniformed activities could be curtailed unless funding is restored immediately. The men and women who keep our ports safe and respond to maritime emergencies are being asked to shoulder risk because politicians won’t do their jobs.
This calamity is the direct result of a political gambit: Democrats are leveraging vital funding to press ideological demands, while operational readiness and public safety hang in the balance. Republican leaders like Rep. McDowell and others rightly call out this wreckless posture — funding homeland security shouldn’t be a bargaining chip in a partisan game.
Congress can stop this immediately by funding DHS and protecting the pay and missions of our frontline workers, not using them as leverage for policy battles. Lawmakers who value safety over political grandstanding should force a vote and restore normalcy to our ports, airports, and coastal defenses before another preventable emergency occurs.
