Doocy shared that he was given an analogy by White House staff, comparing the situation to the U.S. presidents no longer visiting Hawaii 22 years after Pearl Harbor. This explanation was met with scrutiny, as it seemed to downplay the significance of the 9/11 attacks.
Instead of attending the ceremony himself, President Biden sent Vice President Kamala Harris in his place. This decision received criticism, particularly because Harris was seen standing alongside Mayor Eric Adams, a vocal critic of the White House’s handling of the southern border. The border crisis has led to a surge of migrants entering the city and straining its resources.
Former President Donald Trump, on the other hand, not only attended the 9/11 ceremonies during his time in office but also signed legislation providing compensation for 9/11 victims until 2092. This ensured ongoing support for victims dealing with health issues caused by exposure to toxic dust and chemicals. Additionally, Trump allocated an additional $2 million in funding for the National September 11 Memorial & Memorial Plaza.
It is important for a sitting president to honor and remember the victims of September 11th, and President Biden’s absence raises questions about his commitment to this solemn occasion. The comparison to Pearl Harbor appears to be a weak justification and fails to acknowledge the ongoing impact of the 9/11 attacks. President Biden should have prioritized attending the commemoration and showing his support for those affected by this tragic event.
