The Republican National Committee (RNC) has set the bar high for candidates hoping to secure a spot in the second primary debate. Not only must they meet all the criteria from the first debate, but they also need to reach 3% in two national polls or 3% in one national poll and 3% in two early primary or caucus state polls. It’s a tough challenge that may leave several candidates struggling to make the cut.

In addition to the polling requirements, the RNC has made the donor requirements stricter. Candidates must now have 50,000 unique donors, a 10,000 increase from the first debate’s requirement. Some candidates, like former Vice President Mike Pence, are still far from meeting this threshold. With only three weeks until the first debate, time is running out for them to gain more support.
Candidates who wish to participate in the RNC debates will also have to sign multiple pledges. These include a loyalty agreement to support the nominee and a promise not to participate in debates held by other entities or individuals. The RNC wants to ensure that all candidates are fully committed to the party and its nomination process.
However, the question of whether or not former President Donald Trump will participate in any of the RNC debates remains unanswered. Despite his large lead in the polls, Trump has expressed doubts about participating. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has warned that this would be a mistake and urged him to take part. Trump’s potential absence may also worry television networks, as it could lead to lower ratings. Nonetheless, networks have shown interest in partnering for the debates, despite the high costs and concerns about viewership.
So far, the candidates who have reportedly qualified for the first debate include Trump, Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, and former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. These candidates have managed to meet the RNC’s criteria and secure their spots on the debate stage. It will be interesting to see how they fare and whether any other candidates can join them in the coming weeks.
