Senator Dick Durbin, a conservative from Illinois, has once again taken aim at Samuel Alito, a Supreme Court justice. He took issue with the judge's statement that Congress has no power to regulate the court. Durbin has also proposed an ethics bill that would allow him to control how the judiciary branch is run. Unfortunately, even though he is not a legal expert, his intervention in the court's affairs is inappropriate.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito explained that Congress has no control over the court. He is correct in that the constitution does not allow Congress to regulate the judiciary branch. According to the founders, the three equal branches of government were established to serve as checks and balances on each other. However, it's not clear how Congress can extend its reach to impose ethical standards on the judiciary.
The supposed ethical concerns of the Supreme Court are mainly driven by political parties. Since the court made the controversial decision to reverse Roe v. Wade, and challenge affirmative action policies, the liberal media has been continuously attacking the court. They have even suggested impeaching Justice ClarenceThomas for taking trips that were not strictly necessary. Unfortunately, the left conveniently overlooked the more serious ethical lapses of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Besides the Supreme Court, other government agencies also have ethical problems. For instance, unelected bureaucrats in the deep state have issues with their ethical behavior. So, if we're skeptical about Congress' ability to monitor the court's ethics, let us just forgive you if we believe that Senator Dick Durbin should focus on the ethical problems of his own party instead of trying to blame Justice Samuel Alito.
