Journalist Matt Taibbi recently made some surprising revelations about messages he received from Elon Musk, the owner of the social media company X. Now, Taibbi claims that Musk is shadowbanning his account, meaning that his posts are not appearing in search results, resulting in significantly lower impressions. It’s strange to think that Musk would be shadowbanning someone he seemed to trust. Taibbi reached out to Musk in April 2023 to ask about the shadowbanning, and Musk responded by saying they had gone on lockdown due to Substack stealing their data. Musk explained that tweets with Substack would no longer appear in users’ feeds unless it was paid advertising.

Musk’s response is less than friendly, essentially saying that Taibbi is dead to him and should get off Twitter and stick to Substack. Taibbi explains that Twitter doesn’t work for him professionally and Musk suggests that he should use the subscription service on Twitter instead, guaranteeing more subscribers.
However, Taibbi mentions that if he did that, people would accuse him of essentially being an employee of Twitter, and both of them would face criticism. It’s a difficult situation for Taibbi, as he wants to continue his partnership with Musk but also needs to maintain his professional integrity. Let’s hope that this situation doesn’t escalate any further, as Taibbi and Musk seemed to have a successful partnership that exposed those in power.
