FBI Under Fire for Drone Assassination Attempt on Trump During Wray’s Congressional Grilling’

FBI Director Christopher Wray took center stage during a recent congressional hearing that shed light on how a would-be assassin nearly took out former President Donald Trump. This revelation came hot on the tail of the resignation of former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who has now entered the history books as the person in charge during one of the most catastrophic security breaches in modern memory. There's nothing like a little drama in the halls of power, it seems.

Following Cheatle’s announcement, lawmakers, led by Ohio’s own Jim Jordan, wasted no time in grilling Wray about the shocking discovery of a drone used by the assailant. This drone, belonging to 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was reportedly stashed away in his car, nestled alongside explosive devices that appeared to serve as distractions during the attack. Apparently, Crooks thought he was auditioning for a bizarre action flick instead of plotting to take down a former president.

Wray’s testimony revealed that this rigged drone was not just some random toy. Allegedly flown two hours prior to the assassination attempt, it was being piloted around a couple hundred yards from the rally stage. With the ability to live stream for nearly twelve minutes, Crooks was almost a one-man film crew, capturing the “exciting” view from his makeshift perch. But instead of making a blockbuster, he decided to go all “Die Hard” instead—without the charming Bruce Willis, of course.

Congressman Jordan was relentless in his inquiry, prompting Wray to try and explain how the FBI has managed to remain as forthcoming as a kid hiding a cookie jar. While Wray claimed they were doing their best to be transparent, it seems that transparency waned when it came to actual accountability. Who wouldn’t want to know how a drone-happy gunman could have managed to take aim at Trump with multiple shots before being dealt with?

Rep. Dan Bishop took a different approach, suggesting that Wray should drop the pretentious rhetoric and give a no-holds-barred discussion about the floundering security protocols that allowed Crooks to reign free for so long. Bishop’s frustration was palpable, especially when juxtaposed with Pennsylvania State Police Colonel Christopher Paris. While Paris seemed open and candid about the blunders leading to the situation, Wray appeared more like a character from a Shakespearean tragedy, struggling with the idea of admitting fault amid a backdrop of bureaucratic gymnastics.

To add a cherry on top of this already chaotic situation, Bishop also seized the opportunity to roast Wray over the Hunter Biden laptop fiasco. The clown show that ensued during the reporting, where for years it was labeled as Russian disinformation, makes one wonder who is really getting paid to miss the mark at the FBI. Here’s hoping that the next time a serious situation calls for their vigilance, they find the courage to step up to the plate before the cameras start rolling. It’s all fun and games until the drama gets real—and apparently, it is now all too real in the Capitol.
