Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X (formerly Twitter), has once again caused a stir among the mainstream press. He has decided to slash his company’s “election integrity” team in half and fire the leader of the division. This move comes after Musk accused Twitter of interfering in past elections by censoring and throttling content. X is reportedly reducing its global team responsible for combating election misinformation, which means the site is now less equipped than ever to handle problematic content. But let’s be honest, it’s not a private company’s job to police public debates at this level.

Naturally, there’s already a lot of hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing over this decision. Critics of X are quick to condemn the layoffs, claiming that the platform will continue to be a “toxic hellscape” that people and advertisers should avoid. But seriously, why should we rely on a team of hall monitors to dictate what can and cannot be said on social media? Free speech (within legal limits) on these platforms is much more desirable than having biased individuals making arbitrary decisions.
While many believe this move was financially motivated, it’s certainly a welcome development, especially considering what happened during the 2020 election with the Hunter Biden laptop story. We should prioritize the freedom of speech on social media rather than relying on a team that is prone to bias. Kudos to Musk for taking a step in the right direction.
