The Florida Republican Party has made a bold move by removing a loyalty oath requirement for candidates participating in the state’s primary. This decision is a significant win for former President Donald Trump, who has been vocal about his refusal to sign such a pledge. The loyalty oath was added to the party bylaws just a few months ago, but now, it will no longer disqualify Trump as he vies for the 2024 nomination.
The vote to eliminate the loyalty oath took place during a closed-door meeting at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando. While the meeting was restricted to the party’s executive board, there were plenty of Trump supporters outside anxiously awaiting the outcome. Supporters like Debi Stolte of Altamonte Springs, Florida, believe that Trump’s presence on the ballot is crucial and that Governor Ron DeSantis owes his position to the former president.
The loyalty oath requirement generated controversy and criticism from Trump supporters, who felt it unfairly targeted their candidate. This move by the Florida GOP is not entirely surprising, as other state parties have faced scrutiny for changes that appear to be unfavorable to Trump. The California Republican Party, for example, recently approved a rule change for their primary that could benefit DeSantis. However, Republican leaders argue that these changes are in response to new requirements set by the Republican National Committee (RNC).
While loyalty pledges and oaths have drawn criticism from various individuals, including former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, the DeSantis campaign believes that support for the eventual nominee is crucial. Once DeSantis secures the nomination, they hope that all candidates will unite to defeat Joe Biden in the 2024 election. It remains to be seen how this elimination of the loyalty oath will impact the race, but it certainly opens the door for Trump to compete more aggressively in the delegate-rich state of Florida.
