According to a recent post on LakersDaily.com, Royce White, a former NBA player, made controversial remarks about multi-time NBA Champion and future Hall of Famer LeBron James during an interview. He claimed that the NBA star accepted a $1 billion deal from China in exchange for not speaking out about the country’s treatment of the Uyghurs.
The Uyghurs are a group of Muslims who have been subjected to harsh treatment by the Chinese authorities. These are referred to as “re-education camps.”
Human rights groups have criticized that description, saying that the Chinese are guilty of genocide for their treatment of the Uyghurs. The US government also claimed that the country has been guilty of genocide.
For decades now, Nike has been criticized for its handling of human rights issues. James’ connection to the company dates back to his first days in the NBA.
White’s claim, however, did not provide any evidence to support his allegation that James received a payment from Nike for not speaking out about the Chinese government’s treatment of the Uyghurs.
White did not spend much time in the NBA. He played in just three games during the 2013 season for the Sacramento Kings. It was an unexpected end to his career, considering that he was the 16th pick of the 2012 NBA draft.
The brief time he spent in the NBA was attributed to his mental health issues, specifically his anxiety disorder. One of the main symptoms of this condition is fear of flying, which is a requirement for playing in the league.
In 2018, White ran for Congress in his home state of Minnesota. He ultimately lost to a political novice named Cicely Davis. She is currently running against Ilhan Omar, a controversial figure in the political world.
White’s claim about James has not gained much traction in the media. Right now, the NBA star is focused on preparing for his 20th season in the league. He is not worried about the controversy surrounding his alleged payment from Nike.
