The Fulton County Court in Georgia caused quite a stir on Monday when it published, and then swiftly removed, what appeared to be an indictment against former President Donald Trump. This puzzling and unexplained act has raised concerns about potential violations of Trump’s constitutional rights to due process of law, as at least one critic has pointed out. The initial document, which has since been taken down, listed a total of 39 charges against Trump, including the serious felony of racketeering. Among the other charges were felonies related to solicitation of oath violation, false statement, and conspiracy.
While Reuters reported on the document, they had to update their article when it was removed from the court website and the Fulton County District Attorney’s office denied issuing any indictment against Trump. However, Reuters managed to preserve the original document. The court website briefly displayed the document on August 14, officially naming Trump as the defendant and stating that the case was “open.” The reasons behind its publication and subsequent removal remain unknown at this time.
Vivek Ramaswamy, another Republican presidential candidate, weighed in on the situation, claiming that Trump’s due process rights had been violated. He advised Trump to immediately file for the dismissal of the charges and the grand jury investigation. Similarly, a conservative talk radio host has suggested that Trump seek intervention from the U.S. Supreme Court for his federal indictments.
