GOP Senators Rally to Save Trump’s Place on CO Ballot

In a heroic effort to keep former President Donald Trump on the Colorado primary ballot, a whopping 46 Republican senators, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), have come to the rescue! They’ve asked the Supreme Court to prevent Trump from being kicked off the ballot, and boy, are they making a mighty stand.

You see, there’s this pesky little thing in the 14th Amendment that says anyone who engaged in an insurrection can’t run for office again, and the Colorado Supreme Court is using that to try and boot Trump off their ballot. But fear not, dear readers, because Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) are leading the charge with 177 Republican lawmakers in support of Trump. They’re casting doubt on whether Trump had anything to do with the unrest at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The lawmakers are pointing to Trump’s remarks before and after the riot, arguing that it’s hard to imagine an insurrectionist asking for peace and disbanding the violence. They’re concerned that even if there’s significant evidence to the contrary, it could all be dismissed as a “ruse” or “insufficient.” Those sneaky state officials might twist things to mean “Peace means War,” just like something out of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Now, McConnell, the big shot senator, did blame Trump for the Jan. 6 riot at one point, but hey, everyone is entitled to a change of heart, right? The Republican lawmakers are making it crystal clear to the Supreme Court that only Congress has the power to disqualify a candidate from running for office, not some state court. They’re also saying that the 14th Amendment provision just doesn’t apply to a former President like Trump and that kicking him off the ballot could set a dangerous precedent.

But hold onto your hats, folks, because the battle is far from over. The Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on Feb. 8, and Trump is gearing up to file his opening briefs to plead his case. It’s a showdown of epic proportions, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will Trump remain on the Colorado primary ballot? Only time will tell, so stay tuned for the next chapter in this nail-biting saga!
