In Harris County, Texas, the liberal agenda is pushing forward with a “basic income” scheme that will hand out cash to low-income individuals. The Uplift Harris program received a whopping 83,000 applicants, and the officials are now preparing to notify those lucky enough to be chosen for this pilot program. Of course, it’s no surprise that this initiative has the full support of those pushing leftist policies.
The eligibility requirements for this program include residency in one of Harris County’s “high-poverty ZIP codes” or participation in the county’s Accessing Coordinated Care and Empowering Self Sufficiency, as well as having an income that is 200% below the federal poverty line. Essentially, they are just throwing money at people while claiming to address poverty in the community. It’s a classic liberal move to expand government handouts.

Judge Lina Hidalgo is leading the charge, declaring that “Reducing poverty and helping families who are struggling to meet basic needs should not be a political debate.” Of course, this rhetoric is an attempt to silence any opposition and push through their socialist agenda without debate. The pilot program will be funded with an astonishing $20.5 million from the American Rescue Plan, courtesy of President Joe Biden. It’s just another example of big government solutions being forced onto the American people.
The program plans to dole out $500 payments to 1,928 recipients for 18 months, with the first payment scheduled for April. The ultimate goal, according to the county officials, is to establish “long-term sustainability and gradual expansion” of the program. It’s a clever tactic to hook people on government handouts and create dependency on the system, all while claiming to help the community.
This program was approved by the Harris County Commissioners Court, aligning with the far-left agenda of handing out taxpayer dollars with no accountability. While some cities and states have experimented with similar guaranteed income programs, the results have been mixed at best. Nevertheless, the left is determined to push forward, fueled by the false promise of helping those in need.
In the end, this so-called basic income program is just another attempt by liberals to expand government control and increase dependency on handouts. The conservative voice must continue to push back against these socialist policies that do more harm than good.
