Vice President Kamala Harris stood at the podium at Jesse Jackson’s memorial and, in a moment that felt more like a campaign stump than a solemn remembrance, twice intoned her now-familiar phrase, “what can be, unburdened by what has been.” Her lines, repeated and rehearsed, punctuated a speech that mixed tribute with the kind of aspirational, vague sloganeering that has become her signature.
Hardworking Americans watching a funeral to honor a civil-rights giant deserved reverence and substance, not recycled campaign flourishes. Instead of elevating Jesse Jackson’s legacy with clear reflections and unity, the event featured partisan volleys and moments that many conservatives rightly saw as politicizing a sacred occasion.
This is the same vice president who has turned “unburdened by what has been” into a political catchphrase, complete with social-media memes and supercuts that underscore how often she leans on the line. What should be a memorable, respectful eulogy instead became a reminder of a politician more interested in slogans than in steady leadership.
Patriots who value dignity and seriousness in public life should be alarmed that a funeral platform was used for such transparent self-promotion. When our leaders prioritize optics and recycled lines over concrete policy and respect for institutions, it betrays the trust of citizens who expect statesmanship, not soundbites.
Worse, the ceremony included sustained attacks on President Trump and other partisan barbs from prominent Democrats, turning a moment for national mourning into a political rally. Americans weary of constant division saw this as yet another example of the left weaponizing every public stage to score points rather than to heal.
There is a lesson here for voters: rhetoric repeated until it becomes a meme is not a substitute for leadership. If Washington continues to reward theatrical platitudes over conviction and competence, the hardworking people who keep this country running will keep losing faith in their institutions.
We owe Jesse Jackson the dignity of remembering his accomplishments without turning his memorial into a mile marker on someone else’s campaign trail. Let that simple demand for respect guide patriots as we consider who deserves our trust and our vote in the years ahead.
