White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has been found in violation of the Hatch Act by using her position to try and influence the 2022 midterm elections. Jean-Pierre referred to “mega MAGA Republicans” during a press briefing in November 2022. A conservative watchdog group, Protect the Public’s Trust, filed a complaint against Jean-Pierre last year, highlighting her comments as an attempt to influence the elections. The Office of Special Counsel confirmed the violation but did not take any further action and instead just gave Jean-Pierre a warning letter. This is another example of Democratic administration officials getting off easy for breaking the rules while conservative officials are held to higher standards.

Jean-Pierre’s use of “mega MAGA Republicans” was a deliberate strategy deployed by the Biden administration ahead of the midterm elections. The phrase was part of the administration’s effort to paint Republicans as “extremists” who pose a threat to our democracy and don’t believe in the rule of law. President Biden himself used this exact rhetoric during a speech in September 2022, calling Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans an “extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.” This type of hyper-partisan talk is meant to drum up support for the Democrats and paint their political opponents in a negative light.
Conservatives are held to a double standard when it comes to violations of the Hatch Act. Xavier Becerra, Biden’s HHS Secretary, was also found to have violated the Hatch Act, yet he faced no consequences. Meanwhile, Democrats continue to accuse conservatives of violating so-called ethical standards just for breathing. The Office of Special Counsel should be impartial and enforce the law equally, no matter the political party in power. It’s time for Democrats to be held accountable for their actions, just like conservatives are.
