During a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing, Republican Senator Josh Hawley didn’t hold back as he grilled Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The focus of his questioning? Nejwa Ali, a U.S. asylum officer who works for DHS and has been caught making inflammatory social media posts praising Hamas’ recent terrorist attack on innocent civilians in Israel.

According to reports from The Daily Wire, Ali took to her Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts to call for the destruction of Israel and to glorify the cowardly actions of Hamas. In one particularly disturbing Instagram post, she wrote, “F*** Israel, the government, and its military. Are you ready for your downfall?” It’s not every day you see a government employee openly advocating for the destruction of a nation.
Hawley wasted no time expressing his disbelief and outrage at the fact that Ali is still employed by DHS. He grilled Mayorkas, demanding an explanation as to why someone who spews such extreme rhetoric is allowed to continue working within the department. Mayorkas, seemingly unfazed, responded that there is a distinction between endorsing terrorist ideology and simply having “odious” speech. Really, Mr. Secretary? Is that the best defense you can come up with for someone who is preaching hate and supporting acts of violence?
Not one to back down, Hawley continued to press the issue. He questioned whether Ali’s behavior is representative of others within the department and expressed concern for the safety of Jewish students in this country who now live in fear due to increasing acts of anti-Semitism. Mayorkas, clearly uncomfortable, could only offer a feeble response, stating that Ali had been placed on “administrative leave.” Placed on leave? Is that the best they can do?
It’s shocking to think that an individual like Ali, who openly celebrates genocide, is still being paid by the American taxpayers and is allowed to continue working in a position of power. One can’t help but wonder what kind of vetting process DHS employs if they failed to catch this glaring misfit in their ranks. This incident shows a complete disregard for the principles and values that should be upheld within our government agencies.
The American people deserve answers, and they deserve accountability. Hawley should be commended for not shying away from demanding just that. We can only hope that this shocking revelation will lead to swift action and that individuals like Ali are swiftly removed from their positions of power. We must have zero tolerance for those who openly support acts of terrorism and spread hate. It’s time for DHS to clean house and show the American people that they are serious about protecting our national security, both from external threats and from the cancer within.
