Heroic ROTC Stops Terrorist Attack at Old Dominion University

A coward opened fire inside a classroom at Old Dominion University on March 12, 2026, leaving one person dead and two ROTC members wounded before the attacker himself was neutralized by students in the room. Witnesses and investigators say the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” as the assault began, turning a place of learning into a scene of terror.

Authorities have identified the attacker as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a man who pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State and served time in federal custody. He was released in December 2024, returned to the community, and now stands accused of a campus slaughter that authorities are treating as an act of terrorism.

The bravery of the ROTC students who subdued the shooter deserves the highest praise; their quick action stopped further carnage and proved once again that good, armed citizens are the best immediate defense against evil. Law enforcement officials credited those students with rendering the attacker “no longer alive,” a stark reminder that heroic Americans saved lives today.

This tragedy exposes a string of catastrophic failures — from how a convicted ISIS supporter was released and reintegrated without neutralizing a clear risk, to gaps in campus safety that allowed him to strike inside a classroom. Every American who values security should demand answers: how did someone with a known extremist conviction manage to return to campus life and commit murder?

Our leaders in Washington and on college campuses must stop treating security like a political afterthought and start prioritizing the safety of students and faculty over virtue-signaling policies. Universities built on the notion of “gun-free zones” and soft security postures leave young people vulnerable, and this community paid a steep price for that gamble.

This is not a moment for platitudes or excuses from officials who have let ideology trump common sense; it’s a moment for firm action — tougher enforcement against radicalization, smarter parole and release decisions, and real investments in campus defense and training. Patriots who cherish freedom must insist our institutions protect life first, and ideology second.

As we mourn the innocent life lost and pray for the wounded, let every American draw a lesson from the courage shown in that classroom: brave citizens, prepared to act, can stop monsters when institutions fail. Hold the system accountable, defend our campuses, and never shrink from holding those who enabled this danger to answer for their choices.
