Democratic Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, took a moment to “level with New Yorkers” and direct blame for the influx of illegal immigrants to the Biden administration and the federal government. Hochul lamented the lack of progress in securing the border and expressed frustration at the lack of a solution to this ongoing problem. However, instead of calling on Biden to address this crisis by securing the border and removing those who enter illegally, Hochul suggested adding more incentives for migrants to unlawfully enter the US. She advocated for a federal designation that would allow illegal immigrants already in New York to work and support themselves financially.
In a letter to Biden, Hochul pleaded for additional rewards and financial aid for illegal immigrants, conveniently ignoring the fact that New York willingly declared itself a sanctuary state. Hochul made four specific requests for executive action, including expediting work authorizations, providing financial assistance for healthcare, human services, transportation, housing, and education, and reimbursing the state for the costs of deploying the National Guard. The total cost for the National Guard alone is over $22 million per month, a bill Hochul believes should be borne by the federal government.

Hochul’s plea for help from the Oval Office is ironic, given that she was instrumental in creating this crisis by promoting a sanctuary state and welcoming illegal immigrants with open arms. It seems she has finally realized that there are consequences for abandoning border security and ending penalties for those who enter the country unlawfully. Now, she is scrambling for assistance from the same administration that created this mess in the first place. It’s time for Hochul to take responsibility for her state’s choices and work towards a true solution to the illegal immigration crisis.
