The House, controlled by Republicans, voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt. This means they think he did something wrong by not giving them a recording of President Biden’s interview. Only one Republican voted against it. Conservatives believe that the House should be able to check Special Counsel Hur’s decision not to charge Biden for keeping classified documents. They say they need the interview audio to do that.
The House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is a Republican, thinks it’s important for Congress to oversee the Special Counsel’s work. He says that Biden clearly broke the law but was not charged. This makes Republicans upset.

Garland is mad about being held in contempt. He says Republicans are using their power to make trouble.
The Justice Department refuses to show the audio, saying that a written version is enough. They worry that sharing the audio could be bad for law enforcement.
Republicans have other concerns too. They say the transcript of Biden’s interview is not accurate. They think the Justice Department changed the words to make Biden look better.
One Republican, Rep. David Joyce, did not vote to hold Garland in contempt. He thinks that using the law for politics is wrong. He says that Congress should work on helping the people instead of fighting about politics.
Even though Garland could be in big trouble for being held in contempt, it is not very likely. Other attorneys general who were held in contempt before did not get in trouble.
