House GOP Moves to Hold Garland in Contempt Over Biden Probe Files

House Republicans are taking action against Attorney General Merrick Garland for his refusal to provide audio recordings of an interview former Special Counsel Robert Hur conducted with President Joe Biden. The interview was part of an investigation into Biden’s mishandling of classified information while he was a private citizen. Representative Jim Jordan, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has recommended that the House of Representatives cite Garland for contempt of Congress.

A resolution released by Chairman Jordan states that the audio recordings are crucial for advancing the Committees’ impeachment inquiry and informing the Judiciary Committee on the need for legislative reforms within the Department of Justice. Additionally, the resolution emphasizes that an audio recording is the best evidence of a witness interview, contradicting the Department’s assertion that the recordings are cumulative of the transcripts.

Former Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report, published in February, revealed that Biden was not being charged with mishandling classified information due to his age and memory issues. The report states that prosecuting Biden, an elderly man with a poor memory, would be difficult as he would likely present himself as sympathetic and well-meaning to a jury.

The House Oversight Committee has announced a markup of contempt charges against Attorney General Garland, scheduled for this Thursday. This move comes as a response to Garland’s ongoing refusal to provide the audio files, despite multiple requests from the Committees.

The Republican-led efforts to hold Garland in contempt of Congress reflect the party’s commitment to upholding congressional oversight and seeking accountability within the Department of Justice.
