Let’s talk about the late and oh-so-great Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. She’s going to be resting in peace at the Supreme Court in Washington on Monday, before they send her off with a funeral on Tuesday. The court is all set for a private ceremony in the morning, then they’re opening the doors for the public to come and pay their respects. It’s a sad time for everyone, as Justice O’Connor passed away at the ripe old age of 93 from dementia and a respiratory illness.
They’re going all out for this thing, folks. Justice O’Connor’s casket is going to be in the Great Hall on this fancy thing called the Lincoln Catafalque, on loan from Congress just for this occasion. And get this, they’re even putting up a portrait of her from back in 1999. You can catch all the action on C-SPAN at 9:30 in the morning, and all day long.
If you’re in the area, you can stop by and pay your respects from 10:30 in the morning until 8 in the evening. But heads up, you’ll have to hop in line on the sidewalk in front of the high court and enter through the visitor entrance. It’s gonna be quite the event for quite the woman.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? Justice O’Connor made history when she joined the court in 1981 as the first woman to ever do so. Talk about breaking that glass ceiling! She held her own until she decided to retire in 2006. During her time, she was known for being pretty middle-of-the-road, which made her a key player in some big decisions on hot topics like abortion, affirmative action, and voting rights.
On Tuesday, President Joe Biden himself is gonna come and say some words at her private funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington. They’re even gonna livestream the service for all the folks who can’t make it. Turns out, the National Cathedral was a special place for her. She went there often for worship and even served on the governing board during her years on the Supreme Court. We’ll all miss her, but she’s left quite the legacy behind.
