Recent protests by large groups of illegal immigrants and their supporters have unfolded across the country, raising eyebrows and irritation in equal measure. While freedom of assembly and speech are paramount in this nation, the audacity of foreign nationals—particularly those residing here unlawfully—demanding anything but a swift exit is mind-boggling. It’s almost as if they missed all the memos about the importance of law and order, not to mention the fact that their current antics are as welcome as a bull in a china shop.
These so-called protests come at a time when the government’s enforcement priorities are laser-focused on national security. The spotlight is on convicted criminals and those who have standing deportation orders, not the people clogging up the streets with signs proclaiming their right to stay. The optics of this entitlement are particularly egregious and don’t do their cause any favors. If these demonstrators thought that charging into the streets waving flags—foreign ones at that—while hollering about their undying desire to inhabit this land would win people over, they may need to rethink their strategy.

Given the recent shifts in the political landscape, the message to illegal immigrants should be crystal clear: keep a low profile and adhere to the law. Instead, they chose to paint a target on their backs, becoming the poster children for why enforcement is not only necessary but long overdue. The average American is growing increasingly fed up with the blatant disregard for laws that keep communities secure. It isn’t rocket science; people are tired of seeing their streets turned into the stage for loud protestations by those who shouldn’t even be in the country in the first place.
The behavior witnessed during these protests, including blocking highways and burning the American flag while showcasing foreign ones, transforms what might have been a peaceful demonstration into a circus of entitlement. Legal residents and citizens have indeed had enough. What was meant to be a peaceful rally turned into a traffic nightmare, as important emergency routes were compromised. The irony is not lost on anyone: protesting against deportation while actively committing illegal acts makes it hard for anyone to take these protests seriously. It’s akin to showing up at a bank heist with a t-shirt that reads, “Trust me, I’m harmless.”
While some may try to brush off these actions as just free speech, the reality is that these blatant displays of disregard for American laws only harden the resolve of those who advocate for stricter immigration enforcement. If anything, these protests serve to bolster support for the very policies they are so fervently opposing. As cities grapple with how to respond, it’s clear that the average citizen has grown weary of the chaos, and city officials ought to remember whose taxes fund the roads that are being blocked.
These recent events underscore the government’s renewed seriousness about enforcing immigration laws. While American felons remain locked away, those who flout the law in the form of illegal entry seem to feel entitled to protest—and, ironically, protest the enforcement of the very laws they’ve broken. In light of these events, it appears the clarion call for rule of law is louder than ever, and the electorate is taking note, which may lead to consequences for those who stand against it.
