In Illinois, the city of Evanston has successfully distributed over a million dollars in reparations funds to black residents. According to the group that manages the program, over a thousand dollars has already been allocated for various projects, such as remodeling homes and providing mortgage assistance.
Unlike other programs, the city of Evanston focuses on housing instead of slavery. Its residents spoke out about the harmful effects of housing policies that were implemented during the Jim Crow era. This led to a cycle of poverty among African-Americans. As part of their efforts to address these issues, the city prioritized housing.
Robin Rue Simmons, who was a former council member of the city of Evanston, served as the program's architect. She expressed her desire to see the program expand and improve the lives of African-Americans in the future. The initiative, which reflects the national trend of racial disparity, provides an avenue to address such issues, even if it isn't an ideal solution.
In spite of the program's popularity in the city of Evanston, some people are not in favor of reparations. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center revealed that only a third of Americans support the idea of compensating descendants of slaves with money or land. Most of the people in the country believe that it's time for the descendants to move on.
The views of people on reparations were significantly different depending on their race. For instance, 77% of African-Americans support repayment, as opposed to only 18% of white people. There was also a divide within political groups, with 48% of Democrats supporting reparations, as opposed to 8% of Republicans.
