Following an airstrike in Rafah that apparently killed scores of people at a tent camp for displaced people in the Gaza Strip, Israel comes under heavy criticism. According to Gaza's authorities, who are controlled by Hamas, the attack left around 250 people injured and at least 45 dead. Israel claims that two prominent Hamas terrorists were the target of the strike. According to Gaza officials, the bombardment started fires that decimated the tent camp in the Tel al Sultan area of Rafah.
Israel's senior military lawyer, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, called the incident "very grave" and stated that it is being looked into. She stressed Israel’s dedication to conducting a comprehensive investigation to fully comprehend the event’s facts. This airstrike, if confirmed, would be the deadliest in Rafah since Israel started conducting operations there recently.

Information about the strike is also being gathered by the White House's National Security Council, demonstrating the concern of the international community. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the airstrike's goal was to destroy Hamas targets in the area. The IDF confirmed claims of casualties among civilians and gave the assurance that the situation is being investigated. They underlined that the strike was carried out in compliance with international law against legitimate targets and that precise bombs were used in response to information concerning Hamas's presence in the region.
This episode occurs in the midst of a larger conflict in which the Israeli Defense Forces ordered some 900,000 Palestinians to evacuate Rafah following a Hamas strike close to a vital border crossing for humanitarian aid. Following the October 7 Hamas offensive against Israel, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Israeli civilians and was the first invasion of Israeli land since 1948, the current conflict in Gaza broke out.
