Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and his crew of cronies threw their support behind Rep. David Trone (D-MD) in a desperate attempt to divide the party even further in Maryland’s Senate race. This move has only intensified the clash between Trone and his opponent, Angela Alsobrooks, the executive of Prince George’s County, who has secured support from heavy hitters like Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) and former House majority leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD). Even the Montgomery County councilman, Will Jawando, who dropped out of the race, has jumped on the Alsobrooks bandwagon.
Trone, however, struck gold with Jeffries’ endorsement, as well as the backing of Reps. Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Pete Aguilar (D-CA), who rank as the No. 2 and No. 3 Democrats in the House. Talk about pulling out all the stops! This stamp of approval from the establishment gives Trone a leg up as he vies for Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D-MD) soon-to-be-vacated seat.

Let’s not forget the elephant in the room: money. Trone may fall short on individual donations, but his fat wallet, courtesy of his retail liquor empire, packs quite the punch. He’s shelled out a whopping $10 million of his own moolah for this campaign, making him a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, Alsobrooks has amassed a paltry $3 million in comparison. It’s clear who’s playing in the big leagues here.
The endorsements and financial backing are crucial in the heavily liberal state of Maryland, where the primary election in May will be make or break for these candidates. Trone is milking Monday’s endorsements for all they’re worth, even going as far as sending out a text blast to his supporters to tout this “massive vote of confidence” in his bid for the Senate.
