The University of California-Berkeley (UC Berkeley) has become a hotbed of leftist intolerance and violence, as evidenced by the recent abhorrent treatment of Jewish students on campus. A speaking event, “Israel at War: Combat the Lies,” which featured Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier Ran Bar-Yoshafat, was forcibly shut down by a raging mob of pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel protesters. The event, intended to provide a platform for informed discussion and diverse perspectives, was disrupted by a group of intolerant and aggressive radicals.

The despicable scene that unfolded at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Playhouse is nothing short of a travesty. The mob of protesters, chanting “Long live the Intifada!” and brandishing signs with incendiary messages like “Students Against Zionism” and “Stop the Genocide,” effectively violated the rights of the Jewish students and sought to intimidate and silence them. This shameful display is a clear affront to freedom of speech and civil discourse, principles that UC Berkeley once purported to champion.
Video footage captured the distressing confrontation as Jewish students were harassed and threatened by the unruly protesters. The protesters went so far as to break through the venue’s glass doors, flouting the law and causing significant damage. The situation escalated to the point where physical violence and intimidation were wielded against the Jewish students, with some individuals reportedly even being spat on. The emotional toll on the students, including tears and shock, highlights the terrorizing and traumatic experience they endured at the hands of these aggressive protesters.
Ran Bar-Yoshafat, the IDF soldier scheduled to speak at the event, expressed his deep dismay at the ordeal and emphasized that this was not merely an attack on Israel, but a blatant disregard for Western values such as freedom of speech. UC Berkeley’s failure to provide adequate security and allow the event to be forcibly shut down sends a disturbing message that violence and intolerance will be rewarded, while peaceful expression and differing viewpoints will be suppressed.

Jewish students, like all students, deserve to express their identities and beliefs without fear of persecution or intimidation.
