A Fulton County judge has put an unexpected wrinkle in the ongoing circus that is the legal saga surrounding Donald Trump. In a recent ruling, Judge Scott McAfee dismissed two criminal counts against the former President in what can only be described as a potentially inattentive, jam-packed courtroom skirmish led by the ambitious District Attorney Fani Willis. Willis had previously indicted Trump, along with 18 others, on the infamous RICO charges that seem to have become the go-to for those who prefer methodically dismantling their opponents rather than engaging in genuine democracy.
In a move that could be seen as a slight reprieve for Trump, McAfee threw out charges related to the alleged filing of false documents in federal court. Apparently, the judge found that the prosecutors didn’t quite have the authority to bring these charges. One can’t help but picture a bemused Trump looking over at his legal team and asking, “So what’s in the playbook now?” as another of Willis’s legal attempts goes belly up.

But don’t uncork the champagne just yet—this ruling wasn’t a complete victory for Trump. McAfee still let the remaining charges fester in court, meaning Trump’s legal battles are a bit like a bad case of varicose veins: they just won’t go away. Meanwhile, concerns over Willis’s romantic entanglement with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she brought on board, adds an extra layer of soap opera drama. McAfee has ordered either Wade or Willis to step aside—a move that could make even “The Bachelor” look straightforward.
In true procedural fashion, Trump’s team has sought to draw the attention of yet another court to their grievances, seeking the removal of Willis altogether. A Georgia Appeals Court has paused proceedings pending oral arguments set for December. One must wonder if somewhere along the line, someone’s going to toss in some reality TV to spice up the proceedings. Perhaps “Dancing with the Stars” could recruit the entire cast for a live performance?
For anyone keeping tabs on this spectacle, it’s shaping up to be a kind of political theater that many couldn’t have scripted if they tried. In the end, while the dismissal of some charges is certainly a glimmer of hope for Trump, the political machine continues grinding away in search of a bigger headline. The legal chess game continues, but this is one match that seems poised to last well into the next season.
