The world of Korean pop music was shaken this week when it was announced that singer Choi Sung-bong had died by suicide. The Daily Mail reports that the artist’s body was found by police near his home in Seoul’s Yeoksam-dong district on Tuesday morning. Choi reached fame through his appearance on Korea’s Got Talent in 2011, and quickly became an international sensation with his performance of Ennio Morricone’s “Nella Fantasia.” The young star signed a contract with Bong Bong Company and quickly gained recognition from other musicians, including Justin Bieber and BoA.
But things took a dark turn for Choi when it was later discovered that he had falsely claimed to be suffering from cancer in order to solicit donations from his fans. This scandal has plagued him for the past few years, and it’s hard to brush it off.
Authorities believe that Choi’s suicide note, posted on his YouTube channel, was in reaction to these allegations. Fans were left heartbroken over the news, and one of them even tweeted, “My God, this is so sad.” It is devastating to see such young talent ending their lives because of their mistakes. This is why it’s important to hold our idols and role models to a higher standard, and to call out their wrongdoings when they occur. Let’s hope that Choi’s death serves as a lesson to other young artists in the entertainment industry.
I was very saddened today when I read that Choi Sung-bong died by suicide 💔 I first heard him in 2011 on Korea's Got Talent (Youtube). An orphan, he grew up on the streets and taught himself to sing extraordinarily well. I hope he is now resting in peace.https://t.co/CvD44v7I1N
