Kamala Harris has taken a page from the Biden playbook ahead of her acceptance of the Democrats’ nomination, opting to dodge the media like a pro. Since entering the race 32 days ago, Harris has apparently decided that public scrutiny isn’t for her, choosing instead to channel the “basement” strategy that might as well have been issued from the White House in 2020. While most candidates would be itching to engage with the press and flaunt their policy credentials, Harris appears to be perfecting the art of the disappearing act.
Three things are crystal clear from this no-show show. First, Harris aims to carefully curate her public appearances and opinions—because let’s be honest; the last thing the Democrats need is another Harris word salad turning into a viral campaign blunder. Perhaps they fear her knack for turning even the simplest statements into complex verbal pretzels, leaving even her most faithful supporters scratching their heads.
Second, this avoidance speaks volumes about her party’s concerns related to her likability and off-the-cuff capabilities. Americans may remember the last time a candidate was shielded from the press—the media frenzy was practically hilarious, if not downright uncomfortable. Now, with the clock ticking, Harris faces a peculiar “catch-22.” If she talks about solutions for crime, inflation, or the border crisis, she runs the risk of contradicting her own administration’s claims of success. The irony is hard to ignore: the more they try to keep her hidden, the more voters will likely stumble upon the radical positions she’d rather keep under wraps.
