Kamala Harris Courts Voters at Sheetz Despite Lawsuit Over Hiring Practices

Vice President Kamala Harris decided to spread her message of unity and inclusion in Pennsylvania, a state that is critical to the Democrats’ hopes in the upcoming election cycle. However, this particular stop was at a Sheetz convenience store—the very chain that the Biden-Harris administration decided to drag into court for alleged racial discrimination in hiring practices. Nothing says “I support equality” quite like campaigning at a place you’re currently suing.

On a recent Sunday, Harris, accompanied by Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, waltzed into the Sheetz, presumably looking for the ultimate road trip snack. What they managed to overlook was the rather uncomfortable fact that their own administration had launched a lawsuit against the same store for supposedly screening job applicants for criminal backgrounds—an act the administration claims disproportionately affects minorities. It’s almost as if Harris uses this particular Sheetz as a case study for how deeply the Democrats can entangle themselves in contradictions.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a federal entity, filed the lawsuit back in April, contending that the routine background checks employed by Sheetz lead to rejection rates for black applicants at a whopping 14.5%, whereas the percentage for white applicants was considerably lower at less than 8%. In a further twist of irony, the lawsuit asks for the removal of procedures that are common in most businesses, all while Harris is happily munching on snacks. The hypocrisy is practically palpable in the air of that convenience store.

While Harris seems to have an affinity for Doritos—partly because they might have cushioned her emotional fallout when Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016—it’s hard not to wonder if she considered switching to popcorn, the perfect snack for all the drama unfolding around her. Of course, neither Sheetz nor the Harris campaign felt the need to comment on this delicious bit of irony, probably because they were all too busy pretending that the lawsuit didn’t exist.

As the Democrats ramp up their campaign efforts and continue to scrutinize private businesses for their hiring practices, one has to ask: Can they actually manage to practice what they preach? Between the ongoing legal battles and the all-too-vocal critiques of corporate America, the Biden-Harris administration seems adept at pointing fingers while conveniently ignoring their missteps. One thing is for sure—Pennsylvania voters are likely scratching their heads as they munch on their snacks, trying to digest the whirlwind of contradictions being served up right before the election.
