Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei must be feeling pretty lonely these days because it seems like Vice President Kamala Harris has forgotten all about him. According to Kevin Lopez Oliva, the president’s spokesperson, the last time they spoke was way back in June to discuss immigration, and since then, their cries for help with border security have gone unanswered. It’s almost as if Harris has better things to do than address the root causes of migration from Central America, like maybe taking a nap or picking out new shoes.
But let’s not forget that Harris was supposedly appointed as the “border czar” by the Biden administration. Yet, instead of focusing on securing our borders and keeping Americans safe, she seems more interested in helping people come to the U.S. in “streamlined ways.” I’m sorry, but why is it the responsibility of American taxpayers to make it easier for people to enter our country illegally? Last time I checked, we had laws and a border for a reason.

Harris did have one public event on the issue back in February, where she bragged about generating billions of dollars in investments in Central America. Wow, that’s great. I’m sure the American people are thrilled to hear that our tax dollars are being used to boost the economies of other countries instead of addressing the crisis at our own border. Maybe Harris should focus on generating investments in the United States and creating jobs for American citizens. Just a thought.
Meanwhile, illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to hit record levels. In December alone, there were over 300,000 migrant encounters, and since June, Border Patrol has recorded over 1 million encounters. But instead of providing the necessary funding for border security, the Biden administration has been diverting money to nonprofit organizations. Because apparently, it’s more important to fund these organizations than to support our national police and security forces. It’s like they want chaos at the border.
Giammattei has been clear that Guatemala is not a safe third country and has denied Harris’s request to allow foreigners who cross into their country illegally to utilize their migration centers. It’s about time someone had the guts to stand up to the Biden administration and say no. Giammattei has been focused on strengthening the criminal charges and sentences against human smugglers because he understands the importance of promoting regional security. He even offered to host an Air Force base in Guatemala to carry out deportations before migrants reach the U.S. But of course, the White House didn’t even bother to respond to his request for support.
Harris and the Biden administration have their priorities all wrong. They’re more interested in playing nice with other countries and advocating for the rights of illegal immigrants than they are in protecting American citizens and securing our borders. It’s time for them to stop neglecting their responsibilities and start putting America first. We need leaders who will take action and address the crisis at the border, not ones who will make excuses and pass the buck. The American people deserve better.
