Kamala Harris has finally decided to emerge from her political hibernation for a formal interview, but the circumstances surrounding this appearance read more like a scripted production than a genuine moment of accountability. After Joe Biden mysteriously abandoned his reelection campaign and handed the keys of the Democratic party over to her, Harris has had over a month to dodge questions and avoid the spotlight. Yet when it came time for her to face the music, she insisted on doing so in the safety of CNN, a network notorious for its biased reporting, and only if she could bring along her loyal Emotional Support Governor, Tim Walz of Minnesota.
While Dana Bash, the CNN anchor, somewhat surprised everyone by asking tough questions, her progressive leanings couldn’t be completely ignored. She may have turned up the heat a bit, but her brand of journalism could hardly be categorized as hostile. At least it was a change from the typical fluff pieces the network often airs when it comes to Democrat figures. Nonetheless, Bash did probe Walz on his controversial claims about serving in the National Guard, a topic that seems to spark his slippery side.
The state’s governor is being marketed as a relatable, down-to-earth guy, with a teaching background and a stint in the military. Yet, lurking beneath the polished surface are troubling questions about his honesty. When pressed about his claims regarding an active role in combat, Walz squirmed, leaning heavily on general pride and vague references rather than directly addressing his assertion of “carrying weapons in war.” His attempt to connect with the audience felt more like an elaborate dance around the truth than a demonstration of sincerity.
As Walz veered off from the initial question about his military service, it became clear that he was more interested in discussing his feelings than the facts in question. The residents of the state might be interested in their governor’s record, but constituents are also concerned with honesty and transparency. Unfortunately for Walz, there seems to be a considerable gap between his claims and what is documented about his military service.
