The event, held at the Dolby Theater, had its fair share of high-security buzz, clearly hoping for a big name to give those extra measures some red-carpet cred. Apparently, Harris took that credit to heart—or perhaps she just had better things to do.
Reports claimed that her presence was guaranteed enough to raise security levels to unprecedented heights for a ceremony that traditionally involves a lot of schmoozing, glitz, and glamour. If that weren’t enough to generate a few chuckles, the backdrop to Harris’s absence included not only a recent presidential loss but also her rare public outings to Broadway shows like “A Wonderful World” and “Gypsy.” After getting beat by Trump in the 2024 presidential race, it seems the ex-vice president has taken a step back. Depending on her audience, the Oscars might have felt like a daunting reminder of how far the Democrats have fallen since they ruled the White House.

In her recent appearances, she took the opportunity to deliver what can only be described as thinly veiled jabs at Trump in public speeches. Awards ceremonies serve as platforms for grandstanding, and while accepting awards such as the Chairman’s Award at the NAACP Image Awards, she made sweeping statements about rising fears within democracy and the American story being shaped not by Trump but “by we the people.” Meanwhile, the people are just wondering where she disappeared to during America’s glitziest night.
All in all, while Hollywood rolled out the red carpet for another star-studded evening, the absence of Kamala Harris reminded the American public that sometimes, it might just be better to stay home, kick back, and enjoy some chips instead.
