Vice President Kamala Harris has found herself tiptoeing through a minefield of radical demands as she campaigns in Detroit. Recently, she met with activists from the so-called “uncommitted” movement, a group that effectively withheld 100,000 votes from President Joe Biden during this year’s Michigan primary. Their refusal to back Biden came with a laundry list of demands: cut off self-defense weapon supplies to Israel, appease the terrorist group Hamas, and cozy up to the Iranian regime. Nothing says voting rationality quite like playing footsie with those who would rather see our allies disarmed and endangered.
During this meeting, the activists laid it on thick, proposing that Harris push for a halt on all arms transfers to Israel. This particular request rings alarm bells, as it poses a direct threat to the one stable democracy in a region rife with extremism. While Israeli leaders are fighting to protect their citizens from constant attacks, Harris appears to be caught between her party’s radical elements and the reality of international relations. Her team insists she will “continue to listen” to these activists, which is about as reassuring as a toddler wielding a crayon in an art gallery.
The gathering reportedly brought together the founders of the Uncommitted National Movement—two individuals who have gained notoriety for leading a movement to undermine Biden’s support for Israel during a time of crisis. Amidst photo opportunities with the Vice President and her new running mate, Minnesotan Governor Tim Walz, these founders made it clear they were looking for a meeting to discuss their wish-list—an arms embargo on Israel. It’s astounding that a group would demand the disarming of a key ally while the world watches the horrors unfolding in Gaza, where tens of thousands have lost their lives, many of them innocent.

A Harris campaign spokesman attempted to downplay the encounter, claiming that the Vice President had merely reaffirmed her commitment to engaging with local communities. Yet, one can’t help but wonder why, in this age of information, Harris remains elusive on the press front. One has to ask if the first female Vice President of the United States is capable of articulating her own stance, or if she’s forever resigned to let others do the talking for her.
Critics have been vocal about her lack of transparency. Some have questioned whether Harris is leading or merely following the whims of her male advisers. If this is how she conducts herself before the voters in her own party, one can only imagine how she might handle international negotiations.
