When conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk was gunned down while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, the country received news of a vicious, politically charged act that should have united Americans in horror and grief. Instead of decency, too many on the left chose to gloat and demonize, posting celebrations and grotesque remarks that exposed a rot in the civic culture. The murder itself and the public fallout have left families and fellow Americans demanding answers and accountability.
Authorities quickly identified and arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the suspect in the killing, a development that should have focused public attention on justice rather than partisan finger-pointing. Law enforcement and prosecutors moved swiftly, and conservatives rightly insist the killer be prosecuted to the fullest extent while the country resists any temptation to scapegoat broad political movements. Americans deserve a sober investigation, not performative outrage or opportunistic politicization.
Outrage spread when clips and posts emerged showing prominent left-wing voices and random social media accounts effectively cheering the death, and even elected officials made comments that many found callous instead of conciliatory. This moral bankruptcy isn’t a lapse — it’s a pattern that has intensified as our institutions reward performative cruelty and punish patriotism. Conservatives are right to point out that celebrating political violence normalizes it, and anyone who enabled or amplified that behavior must be held accountable in court of law and in public opinion.
In the middle of this, veteran commentator Stephen A. Smith stepped into the fray with blunt words, condemning anyone who would make jokes or politicize the killing and also rebuking leaders who rushed to assign blame without evidence. Smith called out Jimmy Kimmel’s tasteless remarks about the tragedy and warned against the kind of instant, polarizing accusations that only deepen wounds. Conservatives may disagree with Smith on many things, but on this — rejecting celebration of death and demanding decorum — he is on the right side of basic human decency.
Yet the mainstream media’s behavior in the aftermath has been shameful, all too often offering soft treatment to leftist figures while weaponizing every word from conservative leaders. When cultural elites excuse or wink at the dehumanization of political opponents, they foster a climate where violence becomes thinkable and then inevitable. It’s past time for journalists and executives to stop sanitizing or amplifying venom that corrodes civic life; their silence and selective outrage are not neutral.
Americans must demand two things at once: swift, full justice for Charlie Kirk and his family, and a return to a public square where decency and disagreement coexist without threats of murder or calls for celebration. Conservatives will not back down from defending free speech and the right to engage on campuses and in public debate, and we won’t tolerate a culture that celebrates political violence. This moment should be a wake-up call: if we love this country, we must insist on accountability, courage, and the moral clarity to call out wrong wherever it appears.
