The latest installment of “Progressive Meltdown” takes center stage as leftists have turned their anger towards humanitarian icons Bono and Jose Andres for accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden. They seem to believe that a medal from the President is somehow tantamount to endorsing genocide, likely because real issues don’t faze the hyper-political snowflakes of the internet.
Bono, that globe-trotting rock star known for more than just catchy tunes with U2, and the incredibly generous chef, Jose Andres, were among the 19 recipients of this prestigious honor. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, often given to those who embody the American spirit of altruism, was awarded on Saturday, despite the leftist mob’s desperate attempts to paint it as an endorsement of brutality. Apparently, daring to accept recognition for charitable work is just too much for the perpetually outraged on social media.
Naturally, their criticisms failed to recognize that both individuals have made substantial contributions to humanitarian causes, including aiding those in need amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict. Perhaps in their fervent outrage, they overlooked that Andres’s World Central Kitchen actually suspended operations due to safety concerns after one of their aid convoys was struck by Israeli missiles. That slight detail didn’t stop activists on X from attacking Andres for supposedly trading humanity for clout, though. Instead of appreciating the good, they seem to prefer throwing tantrums based on selective outrage.
The criticism of Andres took an even more absurd turn with users asserting that receiving the Medal of Freedom somehow erased all of his charity work. One leftist proclaimed that smart people would have turned down the award in protest of the President, amidst a missive that could only be described as a mixture of loathing and misunderstanding. In this case, it seems that the same people who implore the public to recognize the complexities of humanitarian crises are quick to simplify matters into either a crusade against one side or the other.

Bono wasn’t spared from the criticism either. The left has such a short memory that they’ve forgotten Bono’s decades-long advocacy for humanitarian causes. Jeet Heer, a writer from a left-wing publication, suggested the award was given because Bono doesn’t share the same concerns for Palestinians as the “woke” brigade does. This mentality shows just how little respect some progressives have for individual contributions to charity, choosing instead to villainize anyone who doesn’t fall in line with their political viewpoints.
As usual, the moral superiority complex of the left shines through in their dismissive statements about Andres and Bono. One can only wonder if they have any grasp on the good that these figures have done for those in need or if they’re too busy forming mobs to build up any real compassion. It appears the only real requirement to survive in the progressive arena is to check every box of their tightly scripted narrative, otherwise, they’ll slam you with a barrage of insults, leaving one to wonder what happened to the notion of supporting humanitarian efforts—unless they align perfectly with their ever-fluctuating ideologies.
