Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota (R) is causing a lot of agitation among the far left. Politicians, commentators, and activists alike are charging Phillips with undermining democracy just by using his democratic right to compete for higher office. Is it really true?
After pushing for months for a Democratic governor to run against President Biden, Phillips recently declared his candidacy in New Hampshire. Although Phillips has openly expressed concerns about the president's advanced age and its possible effects on the Democratic Party's long-term survival, it is no secret that he has largely supported Biden's policies.
Phillips has cited a number of polls to support his claims that Democratic primary voters are receptive to considering other candidates. Even Steve Schmidt, a former Republican strategist who is now a staunch opponent of Trump, has joined him in this endeavor. Even though Schmidt quit The Lincoln Project as a result of their numerous controversies, he continues to support Phillips.
To put it mildly, Phillips and Schmidt's recent alliance hasn't exactly made them more well-liked inside the Democratic Party. They have both been referred to as "threats" to democracy by some members. In the congressional race, former DNC committee chairman Ron Harris—who is actually facing Phillips—attacked Phillips, accusing him of putting our democracy in jeopardy by attempting to undermine President Biden. What a ridiculous reaction!
Turns out Steve Schmidt had all of us fooled. For all his claims of doing the right thing, in the end he is just one more selfish, power hungry traitor who is trying to help Trump win in 2024.

Even the far-left activist Victor Shi, who had previously backed Schmidt, expressed regret to his supporters for allowing him to speak. By working for Phillips, left-leaning journalist Steven Beschloss charged Schmidt of putting profit before of democracy. Naturally, Schmidt's old coworkers from The Lincoln Project also chimed in, accusing him of endangering democracy by endorsing a competing campaign.
Phillips appears to be attempting to capitalize on President Biden's choice to not run for office in New Hampshire. In reaction, Biden supporters started a write-in campaign, demonstrating the extreme division within the Democratic Party.
Thus, democracy itself is threatened by the far-left's view of democracy? That the same group responsible for undermining the credibility of our elections for the past few years is behind these exaggerated responses is not surprising. Regarding their side, respect and togetherness are paramount. However, as soon as someone on the opposing side asserts their rights, democracy is instantly under attack. The level of hypocrisy is just shocking!
