The liberal media loves to bash Israel at every turn. But when it comes to Christian safety, the truth is more complicated than the headlines suggest. A new report shows some troubling incidents against Christians in Israel during 2024. But before we rush to judgment, we need the full picture.
Yes, there were 111 documented cases of harassment and attacks on Christians last year. Most involved spitting on clergy and vandalism of churches. These acts are wrong and should be condemned by every decent person. Israeli leaders including the President and police chief have spoken out against this behavior.
But here are the facts the mainstream media won’t tell you. Israel is home to 180,000 Christians who make up nearly 2% of the population. A major survey found that 84% of Christians are satisfied with their lives in Israel. That’s higher than many places in America today.
Israel remains the only country in the entire Middle East where the Christian population is actually growing. While Christians face genocide in Iraq and Syria, they thrive and prosper in the Jewish state. Their children get top education and their women are among the most educated in Israeli society.
When anti-Christian extremists tried to pass a law banning Christian missions, what happened? Prime Minister Netanyahu shut it down fast after pressure from American evangelicals. That shows Israel listens to its Christian allies and protects religious freedom.
Compare this to the Palestinian territories where Christians face real persecution daily. Compare it to Iran where converting to Christianity can mean death. Compare it to Egypt where churches get bombed regularly. Israel looks pretty good by comparison.
Are there problems that need fixing? Absolutely. Should Israel do more to protect Christian communities? Yes they should. But abandoning our strongest Middle East ally over these issues would be a huge mistake that hurts both Jews and Christians.
America must continue supporting Israel while pushing for better treatment of all religious minorities. That’s how we stand up for our values and protect Christians worldwide. Israel isn’t perfect, but it’s still our best hope for religious freedom in that troubled region.
