The Texas Senate impeachment trial of Attorney General Warren Kenneth Paxton, Jr. begins on Tuesday, September 5. Paxton, a former Texas state senator, faces sixteen articles of impeachment. Paxton’s impeachment trial will take place in the modified Senate chamber of the Texas Capitol. The charges against him include abuse of public trust and bribery. Can you believe it? It’s like something straight out of a soap opera! The articles of impeachment were passed with a bipartisan vote of 121-23. However, only 23 Republican legislators voted against the impeachment. So much for party loyalty!
The trial will begin bright and early at 9 a.m. CDT on Tuesday. And guess what? You can watch all the action live on the Texas Senate’s website. It’s like reality TV, but with politicians.
But here’s where it gets really interesting. Paxton’s wife, State Senator Angela Paxton, must be present in the Senate Chamber during the trial. Talk about an awkward family affair! She won’t be able to vote or participate in deliberations, though, because it would be a conflict of interest. I can’t even imagine the tension in that room.
If two-thirds of the state senators vote to convict Paxton on any article of impeachment, he will be immediately removed from office. Yikes! That’s a huge blow to his career. That would be the ultimate political smackdown.
