Freshman Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna showed dedication to upholding democracy by introducing a censure motion against Rep. Adam Schiff. Previously unsuccessful due to constitutional concerns over a $16 million fine, the revised censure motion dropped the fine section but highlighted Schiff’s actions as the House Intelligence Committee Chairman, where he abused his privileges and delivered baseless attacks against a sitting US President. Schiff’s actions have directly impacted the American people’s trust in Congress.

Schiff’s response to the censure motion was defensive, and he directly attacked Republicans by labeling the motion a “hollow sop to the MAGA crowd” in an attempt to dismiss the legitimacy of the motion. However, Speaker McCarthy agreed with Luna’s assessment that the motion will pass and show Schiff that his actions have consequences.

Thus, it remains critical to hold those in power accountable, like in the case with Rep. Adam Schiff, and to support news sources dedicated to reporting the truth. Schiff may have been arrogant and unrepentant, but the censure motion could bring back accountability in Congress, starting with removing Schiff from his post.
